How to Wash Hi-Vis Safety Gear Without Reducing Reflectivity

The Enemies of Retroreflective Tape

High heat — tumble drying on high heat softens the adhesive bonding the reflective microprismatic layer, causing delamination
Bleach and optical brighteners — damage the reflective coating and degrade fluorescent background fabric color
Fabric softeners — leave a coating that reduces both reflectivity and fluorescent brightness

When to Replace a Hi-Vis Garment

Tears, holes, or heavily soiled areas that cannot be cleaned
Retroreflection appears dull when light hits it at night

Compliance note: ANSI/ISEA 107 and EN ISO 20471 both require that garments maintain performance after a specified number of wash cycles. If a garment no longer meets the standard's visual requirements, it should be removed from service — regardless of how new it looks overall.

Extending Garment Life

Turn garments inside out before washing to protect the tape surface. Store flat or on a hanger — not folded with tape creased. Issue workers two garments each so they alternate, reducing wash frequency per garment. Follow the care label exactly; manufacturers design labels to match the specific materials used.
