FR Hi-Vis Garments: When Do You Need NFPA 2112 Compliance?

In hazardous work environments — oil refineries, electrical utilities, petrochemical plants — standard hi-vis polyester vests are not just inadequate. They're dangerous. Synthetic fabrics can melt and continue burning on contact with flame or arc flash, causing severe injuries. Flame-resistant (FR) hi-vis garments exist to address this risk.

What Is NFPA 2112?

NFPA 2112 is the Standard on Flame-Resistant Garments for Protection of Industrial Personnel Against Short-Duration Thermal Exposures from Fire, published by the National Fire Protection Association. It defines minimum performance requirements for FR garments including fabrics, seams, closures, and labels.

Who Needs FR Hi-Vis Apparel?

• Oil & gas workers — upstream, midstream, and downstream operations near hydrocarbon flash fire hazards
• Electrical utilities workers — those exposed to arc flash hazards (also see NFPA 70E)

What to Look for When Buying FR Hi-Vis

• NFPA 2112 certification with test report from accredited lab
• ANSI Class 2 or 3 hi-vis performance on the same garment
• Inherent FR fabric (e.g. Nomex, Modacrylic blends) vs. treated FR — inherent is more durable through washings
• Care label compliance — FR garments have strict washing requirements to maintain protection
